A customer came into the workshop the other day complaining of excessive oil consumption, worried that he was due for a rebuild with only 120,000km on the clock. After a look and a bit of investigation, we discovered that he’d been using the wrong grade of oil. After looking on the Liqui-Moly website for the correct grade of oil, we drained the old stuff, poured in the new oil and that cured it!

Using the correct oil gr ade is just as important as putting the oil in your engine. Use the wrong stuff, and you could cause some serious damage. This customer was just lucky to have noticed it and caught it in time before doing any damage. You may be asking how do I find out what oil to use? Through a little research, and of course a little common sense. There’s a reason you don’t use an oil that’s recommended for new engines in an old one, because it will be simply too thin. The customer had a 1HZ 100 Series and thought he was doing the right thing by running a synthetic oil, but the fact is that older, mechanically injected diesels typically love the good old mineral oil.

More than burning oil, using  the wrong grade of oil dramatically decreases the protection offered to your engine’s internal components. We put our 4WDs through torture when we use them, whether it’s towing a camper trailer, plugging through mud or crossing the deserts in scorching heat. The wrong grade of oil doesn’t have the right ability to cope with those increased stresses, and simply won’t be able to properly cling to cylinder walls and bearings to do its job.

With how far diesels have come over the years and just how refi ned they are these days, you can’t afford to stuff around when it comes to oil and what grade to use. The best advice I can give you is if the manufacture says to use 10w-40, then use that grade of oil! The engine blocks of today’s diesel engines are usually made of alloy, compared to the old cast-iron units.
